Oxford Spires Academy is a state-funded secondary school for children aged 11 to 18. The school is a member of the Anthem Schools Trust that supports both secondary and primary schools in the East Midlands, London and the Thames Valley.
The school had been using a Microsoft Lync 2013 unified communications solution with VoIP handsets as their phone system, but a move to a new subdomain meant there were authentication issues going forward so they needed a replacement solution. As they were familiar with Microsoft and also wanted to keep running costs as low as possible.
We recommended an 80-user Microsoft Teams Phone System which would connect to the school’s virtual Azure environment via an AudioCodes session border controller (SBC) to deliver seamless connectivity, enhanced security and voice quality. Once installed, our Enterprise Microsoft Teams Direct Routing service was used to port the school’s existing telephone numbers to our trusted connectivity partner Gamma over six SIP channels.
Although the school chose new handsets, staff can use the dial pad within the Teams Phone System app on their PC, laptop, tablet or mobile to make and receive calls on whichever device they are using. If a call comes in, all devices will ring simultaneously, and the member of staff can choose which one they want to use. They can move between devices during the call using the park facility, and they can transfer to and conference in other members of staff with ease.
They can also use the Phone System app, along with the rest of the Teams features - one-to-one and group video, chat, screen-sharing and presence functions - plus their Outlook email on their device of choice to give the school remote working options, which is useful if staff need to self-isolate or if the site is inaccessible.
